Wildfire Talk + Tacos with Xcel Energy at Highside Brewery

Community members gathered at Highside Brewery in Frisco for an informative "Lunch and Learn" session focused on Xcel Energy’s evolving wildfire mitigation strategies. While enjoying a taco and nacho bar, attendees heard from Blair McGary, who detailed the company’s comprehensive 2026 Wildfire Mitigation Plan.

Key Takeaways from the Presentation:

Significant Investment in Safety: Xcel Energy has committed to a $1.9 billion total approved investment for wildfire mitigation over the next three years.

System Resiliency: The majority of the budget ($1.56 billion) is dedicated to hardening infrastructure. This includes replacing 10,000 poles in high-risk areas and undergrounding 50 miles of power lines to reduce ignition risks.

Advanced Technology: To improve situational awareness, the company is tripling its AI-enabled wildfire monitoring cameras and deploying 29,000 non-traditional fault detection sensors.

Operational Safety Tools: The differences between two critical tools used during high-risk weather were discussed:

  • Enhanced Powerline Safety Settings (EPSS): These allow lines to remain in service but make them more sensitive, automatically shutting off power if a fault is detected.
  • Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS): Used as a last resort during extreme conditions (high wind, low humidity, and dry fuel), this involves proactively turning off power to prevent wildfires.

Community Support: Xcel highlighted their commitment to outreach, including the use of community resource centers during extended outages to provide water, snacks, and dry ice to affected customers.

The session concluded with advice on personal preparedness, encouraging residents to update their contact preferences in the Xcel Energy app and build home emergency kits to stay ready for potential outages.
